Submission to the Swiss FDFA: Alleged Discrimination Affecting the Family of Yusuf Tarık Gül
On 26 April 2026, the Security Studies and Rule of Law Association (SRL Swiss) submitted information to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) concerning the alleged discriminatory treatment of the family of 11-year-old Yusuf Tarık Gül, who lost his life in a school attack in Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye.
The submission draws attention to concerns that Yusuf Tarık’s family may have been treated differently because his father, Burak Gül, is a former police officer who was dismissed from public service by emergency decree (KHK) and subsequently imprisoned. According to the information cited in the submission, concerns arose regarding the way Yusuf Tarık’s name was presented on an official list and the absence of government representatives from his funeral.
SRL Swiss emphasized that discrimination, stigmatization and social exclusion affecting individuals associated with KHK measures may also extend to their children and other family members. The submission therefore requests that Swiss authorities take such risks into account when assessing asylum, protection and residence applications involving affected individuals and their families.
