SRL Talks #2: Understanding Hate Speech & Non-Radicalization: Case Studies from Türkiye

The second event in the SRL Talks series examined the relationship between hate speech, social exclusion and non-radicalization through case studies from Türkiye
In his presentation, Dr. Kamil Yılmaz discussed the use of stigmatizing and hostile terminology against members of the Gülen Movement, particularly in the post-2016 period. Drawing on data-driven analysis, he examined how such language operates within public and social media discourse and how polarizing terminology can increase online engagement and contribute to the normalization of exclusionary narratives.
The webinar also addressed why individuals exposed to serious human rights violations and social exclusion may nevertheless refrain from radicalization or political violence. Dr. Yılmaz identified several protective factors, including nonviolent religious teachings, personal faith, individual characteristics and cohesive social networks, describing their combined effect as a form of “inoculation” against extremist and violent ideologies.
The discussion concluded by considering the relationship between state-led extremism, hate speech, social resilience and radicalization, and highlighted the importance of rights-based, preventive and educational approaches to strengthening social cohesion.
